Thursday, 11/3/16

The class began with some outdoor romping to get out all that energy!  The kids settled into their morning groups: Chickens and Guineas.  The Chickens are learning a new phonics chart, and we went over each special sound.  We then learned the sounds "au" in "faucet" and "aw" in "saw".  After some phonics review with flashcards, the kids played their favorite spelling review game.  They are really doing a great job with this list!  They then moved to vocabulary and handwriting with Mr. Jim where they continued to focus on letter formation.  They worked through this lesson for their vocabulary lists together, discussing their meanings in great detail!

The Guineas spent some time finishing up their poetry recitation videos.  This group memorized the four stanza poem, The Duel, by Eugene Field.  It was a lot of hard work, and hopefully the video made it more fun!  We will be moving on to other poems next week.  After poetry, the class had their big spelling review game, as well.  The Guineas worked on handwriting with Mr. Jim, and discussed the current vocabulary list as a group, completing a lesson.

After lunch, the groups combined together for history class.  The class recounted the voyage of the Vikings.  Mr. Jim made different parts of the room into different locations and, using their Viking ship coloring pages, the class "sailed" from place to place!  Hopefully this will help them solidify the places in this lesson in their minds!

After history class, the Cows and Horses separated for grammar and reading/writing.  The cows reviewed the four types of sentences and learned a new part of speech: interjections.  We had a great time coming up with different interjections in class!   The Cows listened and read in reading class, and shared their short presentations from home.

The Horse group has been diagramming sentences with adjectives and adverbs.  They have learned about simple subjects, complete subjects, and complete predicates.  Today, the class reviewed direct objects, and I reminded them that they always follow action verbs.  Since direct objects receive the action from a verb, they must follow action verbs. We also discussed state of being verbs, and how sometimes helping verbs can help them, as well as action verbs.  For tomorrow's video lesson, the students will be learning about predicate nominatives!

After our math independent study, the class finished up their fall art projects.  These will go home next week!
