Back to it!

After a hectic morning of getting my crew out the door, I am now officially back into the swing of things!  It feels great to be back... beautiful fall weather and a bunch of kids who are truly happy to be back together for learning and fun! My son told me last night that he was so happy to have a class of friends.... and that he missed them over our break. That, my friends, is what it is all about.

We have a few things coming up this month. Next Tuesday, October 11th, we will have picture day! We will take pictures at the country store next door. Dress comfortably, but appropriately for pictures. I will take some individual ones as well as a group picture. If possible, stick to earth tones and solid colors. (But, no stressing out allowed on this... Just use what you have!)

We will have a Fall/Halloween party on Thursday, October 27. Wear your costumes! We will have our party from 10:00-12:00. We will have a pizza (and salad) party, so no need to bring a separate lunch unless you just want to! I will let you know what we need before the big day!

Spanish- Today, Ms. Joanne brought in material so that the kids could start making their clothing for the big bull fight! They each are designing their own insignia, or crest. It's like a trademark for themselves, as a bull fighter.

Spelling- We reviewed the spelling words for List 7, discussing the spellings of each word.A few of these spelling words use the "when two vowels go a walkin', the first one does the talkin'" rule!

Handwriting- We hung up all the beautiful border sheets that the students created!! The handwriting was amazing and the coloring was gorgeous! Keep up the good work!

Grammar- We discussed subjects and verbs today. To find the subject of a sentence, find the verb and then ask “who” or “what”. Using simple sentences, we found the subjects and verbs, and diagrammed them! We are doing dictation exercises often. I read a sentence aloud and the students have to write it down- with correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. I reread the sentence only once. This is to train the ears and brain! Feel free to practice with dictation at home, if you'd like extra practice.

Poetry- Wow!! These kids are doing a great job of memorizing our poem! Since we have knocked out stanza 1, we will be working on the first two stanzas for the next couple weeks. At this rate, I believe we will be able to tackle our video project in no time!

Math- In our teaching textbooks lessons, we are continuing to review concepts from last year. Today, we took the “greater than and less than” lessons and did a hands on activity with alligators. The students cut out their alligators and pasted them in the correct spots on the page. We took the concept up a notch as we compared numbers to the thousands place.

Social Studies- The kids talked about Christopher Columbus today... reviewing the concepts that they have already learned and putting them to use as they put on a play! I picked the wrong day to forget the video camera! After the skit, they discussed the things that happened during Christopher Columbus' voyages that he could consider successes and things that did not go well. This will become a writing assignment! We worked on developing a paper, which will be finished at home. It will have an introduction paragraph (Who was Columbus and what did he do?), a paragraph describing his successes (They checked off these successes on their worksheet from today), a paragraph on his failures (They put an “x” by these on their worksheet), and a conclusion paragraph where the students need to decide for themselves whether or not they consider Columbus' voyages successful or not.

Art- In celebration of Fall, Ms. Nancy stepped the kids through the sketching of a tree. Then, they used their vast knowledge of primary colors to begin painting their pictures. We are all learning about perspective and color!

Music- Mrs. Beresford led the students through “Be Still and Know”. This is a beautiful song and the kids are really excited about learning it! Practice “jumping over the banana” and “jumping over the gorilla” to play the left hand of this song. Watch the videos and work on this song for next week! Continue to work on Mary Had A Little Lamb and Hot Cross Buns, as well.
